Editing
I edit many kinds of copy. Clients hire me for two reasons:
- They need help reaching their audience. These clients know the subject area but need help assessing and meeting the needs of their readers. I use several editing techniques to make the communication more engaging and comprehensible for the audience such as simplifying and reorganizing text and adding examples, transitions, and headings to guide the reader. As a former attorney, I understand and can explain legal jargon, thus am an excellent choice to translate between the lay and legal audience.
- They need a “second set of eyes” to take a fresh look and identify wordiness, poor organization, inconsistencies, and grammar and spelling mistakes. All of these issues distract a reader and muddy the message.
I have experience editing:
- A wide variety of internal and external business communications:
- Reports
- Proposals
- Articles
- Guides
- Checklists
- Mind maps
- Newsletters
- Brochures
- Educational materials:
- Test questions
- Teacher manuals
- Test booklets
- Website page content
- Blog posts
